The problems encountered in developing high performance CPUs have great effect on new design decisions: Single-core processors left their places to multi-core ones. On the other hand, with the emergence of multi-core architectures, achieving high efficiency has become more challenging considering both hardware and software design options. Parallel software design has attracted great attention and has taken more importance because software parallelism become the only way to high efficiency. In this seminar, after summarizing today's problems in CPU design, current solutions focussed on multi-core architectures will be explained and details of several implementations will be given. In addition, how software can be designed to benefit from multi-core processors will be discussed.
